The short version: BriefMark does not receive your documents, and it does not have accounts.

Your documents

The BriefMark app is a page of JavaScript that runs in your browser. When you select a .docx file, that file is opened, parsed and rewritten entirely inside the browser tab on your own computer. It is not uploaded, not transmitted, not stored, and not seen by us or by anyone else. There is no server that receives documents, so there is no document retention policy to describe and nothing for you to request the deletion of.

When you close or reload the page, everything the app was holding is gone.

What is stored on your device

If you activate a Pro license, your license key and its verification status are stored in your browser's local storage so you do not have to re-enter the key. That data stays in your browser and can be cleared at any time with the "Remove key" button in the app, or by clearing site data.

Network requests

The app makes exactly one kind of network request: when you activate or periodically re-verify a license key, the key is sent to Gumroad's licence verification service to confirm the purchase is valid. Your document is never part of that request. Gumroad is our payments provider; their handling of purchase data is governed by their own privacy policy.

This marketing site loads web fonts from Google Fonts, which means your browser requests those font files from Google's servers. If you would rather it did not, a content blocker will stop it and the site will fall back to fonts already on your computer.

The marketing pages — this one, the home page and the guides — also load Google's advertising tag, so we can tell whether a Google ad brought someone to the site. The app itself does not. The page you mark a brief on loads no analytics and no advertising tag of any kind, which you are welcome to verify: open your browser's developer tools, watch the network tab, and mark a brief.

What we collect

No accounts, no log-ins, and nothing whatsoever about your documents. On the marketing pages, the Google advertising tag described above tells us whether our ads are working, and gives Google the same page-visit information it receives from most sites on the web. The app page carries none of it. If you email support, we have that email, and we use it only to answer you.

Who is responsible

BriefMark is published by Oddwell Technology LLC, a New York limited liability company trading as Oddwell, 350 Northern Blvd, STE 324-1277, Albany, NY 12204. For the little data described above, that company is the controller.
